Scanogram

I was recently introduced to some work by artist Andrea Kemler. Her work is stunning, so colorful and beautifully composed. The most amazing thing about it is it's all done with a large format scanner. A scanner is essentially a camera sitting tabletop. I'm not sure how she gets the vibrant colors she does, although I'm sure it has something to do with the quality of the equipment she is using.

Some of her images are strictly pieces she composed by laying the materials directly on the scanner. She also composes pieces digitally by layering her scanned images. I am in awe of it really.

I thought I would take a stab at it using my rinky dink scanner at home. I really had some fun with this. I started just with an idea about textures and went from there.

  1. I did this too, just fooling about 6 months ago using cut up magazines to make images. I even put a lace doily on my scanner and that turned out great for a sheet of stationary for a letter I wrote...How fun!!

Welcome to Blogland. I am following you now so I'll be back.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. Hi Leah, I'M OVER FROM Dustylu, I love those images and I've done a little fooling around with my scanner too. I had no idea this was an established art form. I'm now following. I'd love it if you'd visit sometimes.

@Sherri B. what a great idea to create stationary, I'll have to put that into action myself. Thanks!

  5. Hi!
Coming over from Dusty Lu's. This is such an interesting technique with gorgeous results. Would never have thought to put some textiles on the ol' scanner. I *LOVE* the fourth image down (gray ruffles), especially! Stationary is a brilliant idea.

Best wishes with your new blog,
    Jami
